Nutrition* in general is important to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle. When you’re pregnant, your body needs optimal nutrition to support the growth of your baby and to give you the strength to carry on a healthy pregnancy.

Healthy nutrition should be maintained during labor and postpartum to provide you with the fuel/energy needed to birth and heal.

I took this picture at a birth in a @nychealthsystem hospital. My client has been diagnosed with gestational diabetes** and was told that they could not have anything by mouth until she births her baby and if she did, only clear foods and fluids would be accepted.

Apple juice is high in sugar (24g/cup), jello (16g of added sugar), “sugar free” pudding (artificial sweetener: Sucralose, Acesulfame Potassium), white sugar (6g) for the tea, and broth which is likely high in sodium. How is this ok for someone with a high risk pregnancy, specifically gestational diabetes or high blood pressure? How is staving someone ok? Why not provide high protein meals/snacks for this particular case? Nuts, meat, boiled eggs, lentils, etc. We already know not eating throughout labor is an outdated practice.***

Please do not get tired of asking about the whys and the how’s of the medical recommendations before you make an informed refusal or consent. Lean into your community to help you prepare your labor snacks/meals if you choose an out of home birth.

Hospitals will have no choice but to improve if, and only if, we demand it.

Day 1 of my Menstrual Phase and I made it my priority to rest and pour into me as soon as I got home this evening. Day 2 will be a full day of rest, keeping my womb (prep the rice sock) and body warm, and taking it easy peasy. We can do it all, but guess what, we don’t have to!

First time harvesting my lemongrass that I brought over from the motherland 🇩🇴 and some ginger root for this delicious and amazing smelling infusion. Can’t wait for the weather to warm up for this beauty to really take off. For now it’ll keep living on my window sill.

Myth Busted: Obstetricians (OB) are for high-risk/medicalized pregnancy & surgical birth. Midwives are specialized in low-risk pregnancy and birth.

Pregnancy is not a sickness and should not be treated as such unless your current pregnancy has truly been diagnosed high risk.

In a study comparing Midwifery and Obstetric Care in Low-Risk Hospital Birth* it was found that low-risk pregnancies that were supported by midwives resulted in “decreased intervention, decreased cesarean and operative vaginal births…”

Medicalized management of low-risk pregnancies can result in unnecessary interventions, increased risk of cesarean and operative birth.

If you are low-risk, I highly recommended seeking the care of an out of hospital Midwife. If an out of hospital birth is not an option, find one that is midwifery led.

Can you really do what you want with your birth? Yes, as long as you are firm in your why behind what you want and fully understand the Benefits, Risks, and Alternatives, of each choice in your birth plan BEFORE you go into labor.

Doctors recommendations are just that, recommendations. Your provider should be providing you with the information needed to make a truly informed decision, be it consent or refusal, based on your individual health history.

Make sure your provider is specific and detailed with the information they are giving you. Make sure you ask more questions if you need more information and are not rushed to that decision.

Your birth and body and baby are yours! Own it!

It’s never to late to fire your care provider or switch, you don’t even have to have a good reason. Although if you think about it there are probably plenty of good reasons.

What are some red flags you have picked up on? Reasons for switching or getting a second opinion?

Were you able to find someone more holistic? Or work with a midwife? Or both?

So grateful for the interest and curiosity and to everyone that asked questions yesterday, working on answering them all, but if you’re eager to get clarity and in to more specifics click “work with me” on my website and get on the schedule!

Stop look and listen before you cross the street people! This incredible tool of observation not only taught us how to cross the street as little ones but it can also be applied to other areas of life and will tell you a lot about where mom is in labor.

Shortly after we were told that she couldn’t be admitted without an exam due to hospital policy ($$$) because that would potentially mean she would be taking a room from someone else who was “confirmed” to be in active labor.

Annnnnddd thennnn, finding out this baby was being rushed to be born by 7AM because the midwife was finishing her shift at that time.

Moral of the story, question people and question them again until you get enough information to make an informed acceptance or denial. People will really try you when you’re most vulnerable to get the answer they want out of you.

If you feel the hospital is the safest place for you to birth, it’s going to take some effort to create that calm environment needed to let your primal instincts take over.

Along with extensive conversations with your practitioners BEFORE labor begins, a sign on the hospital door is a good way to remind the hospital staff of your wishes.

Upon arrival to the hospital, talk to your RN and have them be your blanket of protection against any unnecessary interruptions/distractions while you labor and birth your baby.

Prioritizing rest, recovery, and bonding during the immediate postpartum period is essential for you and for baby. However, achieving these on the postpartum unit may be difficult. The constant interruptions to take your temperature, baby’s temperature, weigh + measure baby at random hours of the day and night, uncomfortable fundal massages, vaccinations, baths, etc. make it difficult to recover and not to mention, hospital beds are not exactly comfy.

How can you minimize these interruptions? Conversations! Talk with your practitioner + take a hospital tour before the birth to get to know what life on the recovery floor is like. Make informed decisions about your care and make your priorities known to the medical staff. Differentiate between which procedures are absolutely necessary based on your individual needs and what can be delayed, or what you would like to simply decline, so you can focus on rest and bonding with baby.

This goes for births at home too! We know family and friends are excited to meet the little one. However it may be hard for you to turn off your hosting hat when people are over. Limit the number of visitors and welcome them when you feel ready. When you are ready to see friends and family, ask them for help! Help doing chores, cooking meals, watching over older children, etc.

How can you minimize these interruptions? Conversations! Talk with your practitioner + take a hospital tour before the birth to get to know what life on the recovery floor is like. Make informed decisions about your care and make your priorities known to the medical staff. Differentiate between which procedures are absolutely necessary based on your individual needs and what can be delayed, or what you would like to simply decline, so you can focus on rest and bonding with baby.

This goes for births at home too! We know family and friends are excited to meet the little one. However it may be hard for you to turn off your hosting hat when people are over. Limit the number of visitors and welcome them when you feel ready. When you are ready to see friends and family, ask them for help! Help doing chores, cooking meals, watching over older children, etc.

“No” is an answer. “No!” is also a complete answer. And if someone says, “No?” This also, is a compete answer.

Birth partners, this post is for you! Depending on the birth setting (home, birth center, or hospital) there may be more distractions and interruptions than others. Whether it is family at a home birth or the medical staff wanting to intervene at the hospital, limiting distractions and interuptions to the birthing person is key to physiological birth. The birthing person must go within and concentrate on overcoming the waves and sensations of birth in order to reduce discomfort so their body can work the way it is intended to for birth.

What does this mean for you? You are the buffer between the birth team (midwives, nurses, obstetricians, etc.) and the birthing person. As their primary advocate, outside of themselves, you need to get to know the birthing persons preferences and have discussions about the birth goals BEFORE the birthing time begins. Get to know the hard “no’s” in the birth goals and what the birthing person is more likely to be felixble on.

Lastly, thoroughly discuss your birth goals with your birth team BEFORE your birthing time and upon entering the birthing space. Remember that you and the birthing person are the ones that run the show. Take Charge!

Birth is a long game and begins from the onset of the first contraction. Sure we are excited to meet baby but do we mentally prepare ourselves for the possibility that labor may take days?

According to the Mayo Clinic, failure to progress is one of the most common reasons for C-Sections. This however can be turned and seen as failure to wait on behalf of ourselves and medical staff. Babies know when to come and we need to trust that our bodies also know how to have a baby and that neither are on a man made timeline for how birth “should” go.

Average length of the first stage of labor for first time parents:
Early labor: 6-12 hours or over a few days (longest phase)
Active labor: 4-8 hours
Transition: 15 minutes to 1 hour

How to mentally prepare yourself for the possibility of a long labor? Birth affirmations, guided meditation, childbirth education, doula + family support are just a few things to help get you there.

After all, birth is 80% mental and only 20% physical.

The early postpartum period may feel like a battle between, sleeping, eating, and bathing. Well mommas, no one blames your for getting in extra 💤 in lieu of a shower here and there.

One of my favorite postpartum goodies is a sitz bath! If you’re birthing in a hospital, ask for one before you go home. Sitz baths are perfect for those days where you can’t quite make it to the shower but need to freshen up your vulva.

A good way to use it is by filling up the basin and bag with luke warm water and sitting in it for 15-20 minutes. A better way is to add witch hazel and/or Epsom salt to the warm water and soak in that. And a better way is to make an herbal tea to steep in that. (Consult with an herbalist and/or your medical practitioner before working with herbs.)

Other than feeling clean after your sitz bath, this will help increase blood flow to the vulva and perineum which will promote healing if you had any tearing or lacerations during childbirth. This will also help relax your pelvic floor making it easier to pee and poop after birth.

This is one of my favorite things to do when I’m on my period. Turn off the lights, turn on the music, light a candle and enjoy!

Call me crazy, or not but your body will NOT create a baby that it cannot birth vaginally!

If you’ve been told this, and don’t have gestational diabetes, it’s likely your practitioner sent you for an end of pregnancy ultrasound and pulled “big baby” out of their bag of tricks to start talking to you about induction. They also may have sent you for an additional glucose test to see if that would back their claim.

Other tricks: low amniotic fluid, placenta stops working, etc.

Even if this is the case, a suspected “big baby” is not a medical indication for induction or major abdominal surgery, C-Section. Chances are, your practitioner doesn’t know how to assist in the delivery of an actual big baby.

One of the major concerns is shoulder dystocia which we can attempt to avoid by birthing on all fours or an upright position, mother led pushing (not a team of people counting down at you), and giving your body the time it needs to give birth.
