Know your history. Know your story. It’s so important to question why you do, what you do. Breastfeeding has been the way of feeding babies and children since the beginning of time.

So ask yourself, why has this changed within the last century? My hope is that, for the women who want to breastfeed, being able to identify the barriers to breastfeeding will be the first step in that journey.

Historical Trauma: During the antebellum period (1812 – 1861), enslaved Black women were forced into the role of a wet nurse, breastfeeding their enslavers children, taking away the opportunity for the same Black women to prioritize breastfeeding their own children.

Lack of Support: Black women face insufficient education and support from health care setting where there are also a low number of Black lactation professionals. Breastfeeding is a communal practice and groups like @birthfromtheearth & @chocolatemilkcafe host lactation support groups where you can get support from peers and professionals.

Discrimination: Black women are more likely to work in locations with inadequate accommodations for pumping along with facing more pressure to return to the workplace sooner after giving birth.

Your body creates just enough milk as your baby is asking it to, most of the time. In the beginning milk production starts with nutrient dense colostrum providing just enough milk to fill your baby’s tiny belly. As your baby grows and experiences changes in development, your baby will signal your body to make more milk through hormones exchanged in the babies saliva and frequency of feedings.

Breastfeeding despite all the ways society makes us think we can’t or shouldn’t without us even knowing.

I am grateful to have had a relatively easy journey from the first latch immediately after birth. I am grateful that everyday I choose continue to breastfeed because I want to, because my there were mothers in my lineage that faced countless obstacles affecting their ability to breastfeed, because I am radically reclaiming my roots, healing the generations before me and the generations that will come after me.

So if you ask me, if it’s “that deep” I will proudly say, yes, it’s even deeper.

Unfortunately the experience of being happy and grateful to have your baby in your arms can happen at the same time you mourn the experience you may have wished you had.

Part of the preparation is in getting to know your provider and your provider getting to know you. Do you fully trust your provider? Does your provider ACTUALLY work for you?

Learning about what is important to you in birth and intentionally seeking out a provider that aligns with your value will leave you with an unforgettable feeling.

I believe that birth is meant to be an experience we want to have over and over again and your care team is a big part in making that happen.

The best time to leave your home in labor is…

When you no longer feel safe in your home.
When your contraction pattern is 3-1-1.
When you would like an epidural.
When you feel like you have to poop.

It’s important that you have these conversations with your partner and your birth team over and over again BEFORE you go into labor. What would it look like if you were planning a home birth and your labor starting varying from normal? What happens if your labor is going faster than the average and you still haven’t left your home for your birth center birth? What happens if you’re high risk and you go into labor at the supermarket on a Sunday afternoon?

You have to know and decide when the best time is for YOU to go to your birthing place based on your preferences and/or circumstances. Labor and birth is not a one size fits all and your doula is there to make sure to individualize your experience.

Some moms will experience practice contractions prior to contractions that lead to the true labor experience. This may be a confusing and/or frustrating time for you as you work to figure out the meaning of the sensations you are feeling especially if this lasts over the coarse of a week or more.

Not to fear, these practice contractions are normal and can be used just as that, practice for your true labor. How are you reacting to the practice contractions? Do you tighten up every muscle in the body? Are you holding your breath? Is your mind racing thinking about what comes next? Take advantage of the sensations brought on by the practice contractions to slow down and PRACTICE for actual labor.

The 1st best time to hire a doula is when you’re planning your pregnancy. The 2nd time, is when you find out your pregnant. The 3rd time, is before you give birth.

Doulas provide educational, emotional, and physical support during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum experiences. The earlier you hire you’re doula, the more time you have to get to know them. Hiring a doula as soon as you find out your pregnant also gives you longer access to your doula as they provide phone/text support outside of your scheduled prenatal meetings.

Think of us as your go to all around info hub for resources and guidance all with the purpose of helping you establish your voice throughout your prenatal care. Additionally, postpartum, we are here to make space for your healing. Dishes? Done. Meal prep? Done. Breastfeeding support? You got it!

Let’s normalize “boring” childbirth. Not all births are “movie” births. Hollywood has to make it interesting so it sells. *cue huge gush of water breaking in the middle of the grocery store only to be rushed to the hospital and have the baby in the parking lot*

But you? Your job is to mind your business and birth that way you need to whether that’s roaring like a lion or as quiet as a mouse. Understanding that a lot of the discomfort in birth comes from resistance will bring you closer to a better birth.

Writing this post reminds me about how I labored with deep breathing and humming and also some grunting. It also reminds me of how my grandma passes her entire day humming while doing mindless tasks.

The breathing exercises shared are only two of the ways to stimulate your vagus nerve for an easier birth experience.

Dance, dance, take a nap, drink some water, and keep on dancing!!! Did you know that dancing can reduce discomfort in labor, shorten the duration of labor, promote spontaneous labor, and improve maternal satisfaction with childbirth?

Why? Dancing helps boost oxytocin, a principle labor hormone, especially when you’re dancing to music you like with the people you love! Dancing also gets all of your pelvic joints to move which encourages baby to engage.

Everyday looks different and at first it was hard to find a rhythm. Some days, it still is hard to find a flow.

Keeping baby on a consistent nap schedule has been helpful in giving me time to focus on clients and building my Doula business. When she plays independently I quickly open up the laptop to cross some more tasks off the list. I find time to take outside visits when my MIL comes to watch her for me.

When she is awake, finding creative ways to incorporate her into what I am doing helps us connect and still get things done. Some days I cook and clean with her on my back. Some days, she’s emptying the cupboards while I work around her exploration. Other day’s I’m running after her because she figured out how to get outside so now I need a baby gate for the door to the porch. SEND REC’S IN THE COMMENTS 👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾

Here’s a bonus! You can dance típico at a wedding while your baby sleeps soundly on your chest!

This postpartum awareness week I want to highlight one of my favorite postpartum activities, babywearing!

Babywearing has allowed me to keep my baby close while I do all the things that require the use of two hands, ie. cooking, cleaning, gardening, etc. And once I figured out how to wear her on my back, it was OVER! There’s nothing I can’t do while wearing my baby girl.

Such a special time wearing her on my vacation to the Dominican Republic, remembering and honoring the traditional practices that kept our babies close like they were meant to be. Did you know humans are “carry” mammals? More on that in another post.

Queremos reducir la incidencia de los trastornos del estado de ánimo posparto (PMDs) en las comunidades de color de NYC mediante un cuidado accesible y con raíces culturales.

Perfecto para madres/padres primerizas y quienes desean aprender más. Estos grupos son espacios acogedores donde compartir, conectar y encontrar apoyo real con un equipo experimentado.
